Frontier Airlines has expanded its flight offerings from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport with a new route to Southern California, the ultra-low-cost carrier will begin service between Phoenix and Hollywood Burbank Airport starting November 21.

The new service, disclosed by Frontier Airlines (Nasdaq: ULCC), is slated to operate four times weekly, introducing additional travel options for passengers and direct competition to American Airlines (Nasdaq: AAL) and Southwest Airlines (NYSE: LUV), both of which currently offer nonstop flights on this route, ABC15 reported.

This expansion is part of a larger strategy by Frontier, which includes the launch of 11 new routes across 15 airports scheduled to begin in October and November. Josh Flyr, the vice president of network and operations design at Frontier, told the Business Journal, "As consumers look ahead to the fall and winter months and make their holiday plans, we are thrilled to once again expand our roster of convenient and affordable travel options." From Hollywood Burbank Airport, Frontier will also add flights to San Francisco and Denver.

The airline, which faced scrutiny in the past for its additional fees, has made recent adjustments to its pricing model to enhance the transparency of the total price customers see when booking. Despite offering low base fares, Frontier's approach often included charges for services like seat selection and carry-on bags, which legacy carriers typically include in their pricing, ABC15 noted.

Frontier Airlines has ascended to become one of the top five airlines in Phoenix over the last few years, cementing its status with the opening of an employee base at Sky Harbor in November 2022, housing 180 pilots and 275 flight attendants. This push was expected to bring more than $118 million in annual wages to the local economy. With Phoenix-based Indigo Partners LLC, helmed by aviation veteran Bill Franke as its majority shareholder, Frontier keeps reinforcing its presence and impact in the region, as detailed by the Business Journal.
