The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has taken the reins in looking into an officer-involved shooting that took place in Covington, Newton County. This incident, which unfolded on Saturday, August 24, became subject of investigation after the Newton County Sheriff’s Office reached out to the GBI for assistance. The man injured in the confrontation is 34-year-old Covington resident John Cortez Biles.
According to reports, a woman dialed 911 due to concerns for safety within a residence located on the 400 block of Barshay Drive. Deputies who responded, having prior knowledge of Biles and current warrants for his arrest, found him at the property. Biles allegedly attempted to flee through the back door and produced a firearm, prompting the officers to quickly open fire, striking him in the process. Notably, there were no officer injuries reported during the episode. GBI's statement details these initial findings.
Following the incident, Biles required medical attention and was subsequently transported to a local hospital. His condition remains under wraps, as medical privacy laws protect such information. However, at the time of the shooting, the officers involved were unharmed, as reiterated in official reports by authorities.
The GBI's mandate is to conduct an independent and thorough investigation to fully ascertain all facets of the case. This protocol intends to ensure an unbiased review of the circumstances surrounding the officer-involved shooting. Upon completion of their investigation, GBI will turn over their findings to the Newton County District Attorney's office, who will then critique the case.
