Steering towards a safer future, the Georgia Department of Transportation has rolled out a new strategy to curb unsafe driving through a mobile app, in an effort reported by Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB). The "Reach Home Safely" app, developed in collaboration with Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT), doesn't only aim to educate Georgians but it creates an incentive-based system where safe driving could lead to rewards.

In its launch announcement on August 1, GDOT clearly seeks to leverage the competitive spirit of Georgians responsibly. Users are prompted to willingly download the Reach Home Safely from both the App Store and Google Play Store, activating it to automatically monitor their driving habits. Once the app is in action, participating individuals have the opportunity to win a range of prizes courtesy of their partnership with the Atlanta Braves, which includes team merchandise and exclusive experiences.

Highlighted features of the app such as a driving score, feedback on driving behavior, and contest rankings serve not just for personal reflection but for statewide progression in road safety. "Ensuring that every Georgian reaches their destination safely is our top priority," Georgia DOT Commissioner Russell R. McMurry told GPB. This digital advancement is driven by previous success, with CMT data illustrating substantial decreases in distracted driving and hard braking incidents through the use of similar programs.

The app's data, collected entirely in anonymity, hopes to significantly reduce the number of crashes and fatalities in the state of Georgia over time. In fact, reducing distracted driving by just 10% could already prevent thousands of crashes and save millions in economic damages annually, according to estimations by CMT. As the Braves' season goes on, so will the contests, with varying prizes to maintain engagement and commitment to safer roads.
