Georgia's athletic gender politics took center stage as Sen. Greg Dolezal was handed the reins of the newly-formed Georgia Senate Special Committee on the Protection of Women's Sports. In an announcement cited by Senate Press, Dolezal emphasized his personal stake in the issue, stating, "As the father of three daughters, I have a firsthand understanding of how important it is to maintain the sanctity of women’s sports."
Dolezal further decried the participation of "biological males" in women's sports as a "clear and present danger" to safety and integrity. The senator's priorities align with those of Lt. Governor Burt Jones, who was quoted in Senate Press saying, "We will not stand idly by while radical politicians, athletic associations, schools and higher education institutions push policies threatening this right." The committee's mission, as per Lt. Governor Jones, is to investigate and ensure female athletes in Georgia are competing in a supposedly fair environment.
The Georgia Senate Special Committee on the Protection of Women's Sports comes into existence under Senate Resolution 4 and has a sunset date of December 15. The members appointed to this committee, as detailed in the Senate Press release, include notables such as Senate Majority Caucus Chairman Sen. Jason Anavitarte, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Education and Youth Sen. Clint Dixon, and the Governor’s Floor Leader Sen. Bo Hatchett. Democrats Sen. Freddie Powell Sims and Sen. Sheikh Rahman are also onboard, along with other Republican senators.
While the formation of this committee signals a growing politicization of sports at a legislative level in Georgia, its actual effectiveness in creating or influencing policies remains to be seen. Advocates for transgender inclusion in sports contend that such committees and their missions are often rooted in discrimination rather than safety, a claim that will undoubtedly shadow the committee's workings until its dissolution in late 2024. Nonetheless, Lt. Governor Jones and Chairman Dolezal appear resolute per their statements in ensuring that their version of fairness remains the norm in the state's athletic competitions.
