Authorities in Greenville have apprehended Jermal Burrell, a 28-year-old man linked to the fatal shooting of 25-year-old Cameron Chavers in South Dallas. As reported by The Dallas Morning News, the incident that took place on June 18 follows an altercation that escalated, resulting in Chavers being shot and later pronounced dead at the scene.

Burrell now faces a murder charge, as well as two drug-related charges according to online jail records. It's currently unclear if he has sought legal representation. Bail for the murder charge has been set at $1 million. In a statement obtained by The Dallas Express, the Dallas Police Department disclosed that Burrell was detained on August 1st and is currently held in Hunt County jail.

Dallas Police were summoned to the 3800 block of Wilder Street on the evening of the shooting. The Dallas Fire-Rescue team responded to the emergency but could not save the victim. The preliminary investigation by Dallas PD suggested that the confrontation between the victim and the suspect turned physical before the fatal shot was fired, as per The Dallas Morning News.

This year has seen a troubling number of murders within the city of Dallas. As indicated by the City of Dallas crime analytics dashboard, there have been 122 murders committed to date this year, with Council Member Adam Bazaldua’s District 7 witnessing the highest count at 24. The Dallas Police Department has combat crime amidst ongoing staffing issues, with a force of 3,000 active officers, short of the 4,000 recommended for Dallas' population. "The Dallas City Council signed off on a budget of only $654 million for DPD this fiscal year," noted The Dallas Express, an amount that lags what is spent in other high-crime cities.
