A USPS carrier is now facing multiple charges after being apprehended by the Gwinnett County Police Department for offenses including mail theft, unlawful dumping of mail, and drug possession. The postal worker identified as Marcus Gregory was subjected to scrutiny by officials after a pattern of missing deliveries sparked a series of complaints.
According to Gwinnett County authorities, undercover agents watched as Gregory purportedly abandoned mail in the woods off Williams Farm Road and Highway 316 on July 31. Post-dumping, Gregory was allegedly witnessed to now use illegal substances within the confines of his vehicle. An ensuing traffic stop resulted in his arrest as officers discovered more illegal substances and a firearm.
Following the arrest, a search of Gregory's work vehicle uncovered additional mail pieces. A closer investigation of his personal vehicle, stationed at a local post office, found 215 pieces of mail that were presumed stolen. A subsequent warrant issued and carried out at Gregory's place of residence turned up more mail, adding to the already burgeoning list of evidence against him.
This case emerged from collaborative efforts between local law enforcement and the USPS Inspector General's Office. Gregory confronts serious ramifications, charged with a bundle of felonies including DUI drugs, possession of a schedule I narcotic, and possession of a firearm during a crime. Charges extended to theft of mail and obstruction, tallying up to 51 felony warrants alongside 9 misdemeanors.
While the investigation remains ongoing, the seizure of misplaced correspondences has left many residents in a lurch, relying on the USPS for vital communication and service.
