The California Highway Patrol (CHP) has reported the arrest of two individuals, Elias Jimenez, 22, and Maria Martinez, 43, both residing in Hayward, in the wake of a freeway shooting that sparked a vehicle fire in San Leandro this month.
According to the California Highway Patrol press release, the incident occurred on the evening of Tuesday, August 6, when officers were called to a car fire on northbound Interstate 880. They discovered the car ablaze in the center divider after a driver reported being shot at by another vehicle, which led her to crash and the car to catch fire. The driver and a juvenile passenger sustained minor injuries.
The CHP’s Golden Gate Division Special Investigations Unit (SIU) took over the case. It pinpointed Jimenez and Martinez as the suspects using information from Flock Safety cameras and other investigative work. Last Thursday, with the support of SWAT, detectives executed warrants, arresting Jimenez and Martinez without incident. A firearm believed to have been used was recovered.
The duo faces a slew of felony charges, including attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, discharging a firearm at an occupied motor vehicle, possession of a loaded firearm, and possession of a high-capacity magazine. After a thorough investigation, the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and formally announced charges against both suspects yesterday.
