The Safe Rest Pods situated on SW 17th Avenue, close to Winco and Dairy Creek Park, are providing a crucial service as the interim solution for those grappling with homelessness. This temporary housing initiative has been active since its reopening in December 2023, offering a safe haven to roughly 30 to 40 individuals and couples each night, inclusive of their pets. According to a recent update from the City of Hillsboro, the facility has so far accommodated 99 guests from 95 households.
More than just a place to sleep, the pods have aided in establishing a critical stepping stone for many on their journey to stability. The shelter's efforts have culminated in the successful placement of 18 guests into more permanent housing arrangements, while all of its 99 guests have been connected to housing assessments. These assessments are often the first significant stride towards attainable, long-term housing solutions. Notably, these figures have been released as the city prepares for the next phase: the construction of a year-round shelter at the same location.
The pods have been helpful as a temporary solution, but the facility will close by the end of October 2024 to make way for a permanent shelter. This new shelter will provide more stable support for people experiencing homelessness. The city’s decision reflects its commitment to long-term solutions for homelessness, in partnership with various agencies helping vulnerable populations.
