Hillsborough County is set to observe a poignant chapter in American history with its annual Patriot Day: 9/11 Remembrance event next month. Scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on September 11, the ceremony aims to honor those who fell during the September 11 terror attacks 23 years ago. The gathering will be held at Veterans Memorial Park & Rear Admiral LeRoy Collins, Jr. Museum, located at 3602 U.S. Highway 301 N., Tampa, FL. According to the Hillsborough County announcement, this solemn occasion is not only a tribute but also an educational opportunity for the youth who might not remember the fateful day.
The event's itinerary features visuals such as a large American flag being hoisted by ladder trucks, and a ceremonial ringing of the bell by fire service personnel. An escort of the 'beam,' a section of steel from the destroyed World Trade Center, will commemorate the ultimate sacrifices of 9/11. Additionally, various local organizations including Hillsborough County high schools' JROTC programs and public safety officials like Fire Rescue Chief Jason Dougherty, will be part of the proceedings. In an effort to encourage community engagement, attendees will have the opportunity to mingle with these service professionals following the ceremony.
Aside from the formalities, there will also be a display of fire rescue and military equipment. The U.S. Coast Guard is set to showcase a 29-foot rescue response boat, while the U.S. Marine Corps will present a military vehicle. These interactive exhibits serve as tangible connections between citizens and the individuals dedicated to national security and community safety. Organizers hope to inspire a sense of duty and service in those too young to have lived through the 9/11 events.
The 23rd Anniversary Patriot Day: 9/11 Remembrance event is set to take place at the park's outdoor amphitheater and is free for the public. Guests are welcome to explore the park's many memorials post-ceremony.
