A section of the historic Old Route 66 is set for closure starting next week due to construction work. The Coconino County Public Works Department has announced on its website that the affected stretch is between Cool Pines Road and Sherwood Forest Road, with an age-worn culvert due for replacement. Beginning Monday, August 26, the road will be inaccessible for an estimated length of 65 days.
The construction focuses on the Volunteer Wash box culvert and comes with a notable price tag of $1 million. The project intends to thoroughly reconstruct the outdated infrastructure with a newer, reinforced model. According to Coconino County's notice, the culvert is located about 0.70 miles east of N. Cool Pines Road and 0.45 miles west of N. Sherwood Forest Road. Commuters are advised to ironically expect delays and to detour onto E. Pittman Valley Road during this period.
Tiffany Construction, the contractor entrusted with the task, will operate predominantly on weekdays during the forgiving light of day, although the possibility of weekend work has not been ruled out. The construction site will implement flaggers, clear detour signage, and additional traffic control measures to facilitate the redirection of vehicles.
Coconino County Public Works Department has offered assurances that they will keep the public updated on the progress of the operation. Regular construction updates are to soon be posted on the project's dedicated web page.
