After a tense situation on the Fremont Bridge, authorities report that the individual involved is now safe and no longer in harm’s way. The bridge, which was temporarily closed during the incident, has opened again to traffic in both directions, easing the afternoon commute for Portland residents, according to the Portland Police Bureau.
Portland Police were at the scene assisting the man, who had been on the wrong side of the bridge's railing when the officers arrived, and after a period of negotiation and assurance they were able to coax him back to safety, the situation ended without injury and the man was transported to a local hospital for an evaluation, the purpose of the evaluation was to understand his state of mental health and to ensure that he will receive the appropriate care and support he needs, as per the Portland Police Bureau.
In light of this event, the Portland Police Bureau highlighted accessibility to mental health resources for the community. "Suicide is preventable," they remind us in their press release, urging those in crisis or those who know someone in distress to reach out for confidential support.
