One person is dead and two others are injured after a shooting erupted before dawn Saturday near Portland's Hosford-Abernethy neighborhood, with the deceased victim ultimately located inside a vehicle at a gas station nearly a mile from where the gunfire began. Portland Police officers responded to the initial shooting report at Southeast Water Avenue and Southeast Caruthers Street just before 3 a.m., finding a scene with multiple injured people.
According to Portland Police, one patient was transported to the hospital by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries, while another was taken to the hospital by private vehicle with a prognosis described as unknown. A third patient was found deceased inside a vehicle at a gas station near Southeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Southeast Alder Street. Portland Police Bureau homicide unit detectives responded to the scene and are now leading the investigation, though the department says no suspect information is available at this time.
Two Crime Scenes, Nearly a Mile Apart
The geography of the case adds a layer of complexity for investigators. The primary shooting site sits in an industrial waterfront zone just steps from prominent civic landmarks including the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry and the Hampton Opera Center, according to Travel Oregon. The area borders the Willamette River and central eastside transit routes.
The second scene, where the deceased victim was ultimately found, sits roughly 0.8 miles north of the initial gunfire, in the adjacent Buckman and Central Eastside commercial corridor, per the Southeast Examiner. That intersection sits near commercial centers and social service facilities. Police say the areas around both Southeast Water Avenue and Southeast Caruthers Street, and Southeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Southeast Alder Street, remain closed as detectives work the case.
A Neighborhood Better Known for Break-Ins Than Bloodshed
Hosford-Abernethy, as defined by city records, stretches from the Willamette River east to Southeast 29th Avenue and from Hawthorne Boulevard south to Powell Boulevard, encompassing both the historic Ladd's Addition enclave and heavy industrial waterfront blocks, according to the City of Portland. The neighborhood's crime profile is typically dominated by property offenses rather than violence against people — local statistics showed 47 of the neighborhood's 89 total offenses in January 2024 were property crimes, according to The Clarion.
That backdrop makes Saturday's fatal, multi-victim shooting a notable departure from the area's usual public-safety patterns. The neighborhood has seen major violence before, however: a local music producer was sentenced to consecutive life terms in November 2023 for the May 2022 fatal shooting of Morgan Victor inside a Hosford-Abernethy apartment on Southeast Division Street, according to KGW.
A Summer Spike Amid Longer-Term Declines
Saturday's shooting also lands amid a broader citywide tension between long-term progress and short-term volatility. City officials reported a 51% drop in homicides across Portland during the first half of 2025 compared to the previous year, a decline officials credited to targeted police enforcement and community violence intervention programs, with Mayor Keith Wilson pointing to the Portland Ceasefire initiative. Portland Police Bureau open crime data also showed shooting incidents citywide dropped 30% in 2025, marking the city's lowest annual shooting total in six years.
But that progress has not held steady through the summer. Local police data compiled in July showed Portland recorded 59 shootings in June alone, the highest single-month total for gun violence in the city since January 2025. Saturday's incident follows other recent violence along the Willamette River corridor, including an August 4 fatal shooting and vehicle crash that killed 41-year-old Anwar A. Osman on South Macadam Avenue, just over a mile south across the river, as Hoodline previously reported.
Citywide, violent crime still represents a small share of overall police activity. Portland Police Bureau crime summaries showed that out of roughly 58,200 total reported crimes in 2025, crimes against persons accounted for 10,510 incidents, with property crimes forming the vast majority, according to KGW.
