A man was rushed to a local hospital with serious injuries Monday afternoon after being shot near Southwest Market Street and Southwest 4th Avenue in downtown Portland, just steps from Keller Auditorium. Police shut down streets in the immediate area while investigators processed the scene, and as of Monday evening, no suspects had been apprehended.
Portland police officers responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting near the busy downtown intersection, according to KPTV. Officers arrived to find a man suffering from a gunshot wound, and dispatch sent 16 police units to the scene. A Portland Police Bureau spokesperson told the station the man was taken to a local hospital after suffering serious injuries. The location sits directly adjacent to Keller Auditorium, a major municipal performing arts venue, according to KGW.
A String of Recent Portland Shootings
Monday's shooting is the latest in a run of violent incidents that have rattled Portland in recent weeks. Six days earlier, on August 4, police investigated a fatal shooting and vehicle crash on South Macadam Avenue near the South Waterfront, just over a mile south of Market Street, where 41-year-old Anwar A. Osman was killed, as reported by Your Oregon News. Osman was found unconscious with gunshot wounds inside a vehicle that had crashed into a building.
Two days before that, an early-morning shooting at a party in the Cully neighborhood left an 18-year-old dead and five others injured, prompting a citywide police response, per OPB. Downtown Remains a Priority Zone
City Ceasefire reports have designated downtown and the adjacent Old Town/Chinatown district as high-priority zones due to elevated rates of injury and fatal shootings compared with other parts of Portland, Hoodline reported in April. Investigators in downtown shooting cases have also turned to federal partners when suspects flee the state. In one prior case, federal marshals arrested a 23-year-old suspect in Virginia tied to a December 2025 alley shooting near Southwest Ankeny Street that killed one man and injured another, with the suspect later extradited to Oregon to face homicide charges, Hoodline reported. The Bigger Picture on Gun Violence
Despite the recent cluster of incidents, Portland has seen significant multi-year declines in gun violence overall. Portland Police Bureau data reported by KATU in December showed that shooting incidents citywide fell 30% in 2025 to 525 incidents, the lowest annual total since 2019, with city officials crediting community partnerships and targeted police teams for the drop. As of Monday evening, police had not apprehended any suspects in the Market Street shooting, and no suspect description had been released.
