The West Palm Beach Police Department (WPBPD) is currently investigating a shooting that took place near the site of their National Night Out event. According to CBS12, the incident happened a block away from the outreach event, meant to foster partnerships and community spirit. The shooting occurred at the 1000 block of State Street, right before families were to gather for the evening's activities.
Officers who were preparing for the National Night Out heard the gunfire at approximately 4:14 p.m. and responded immediately. A victim, a 39-year-old West Palm Beach man, was found injured near the intersection of State Street and Tamarind Avenue, suffering from gunshot wounds to his right leg and left arm. "This is exactly what the chief’s initiative is about – disrupting the riffraff and crime in the neighborhood," WPBPD spokesperson Mike Jachles told CBS12. The victim received first-aid at the scene and was then transported to St. Mary's trauma center in serious condition. As of Tuesday night, the victim was not cooperating with law enforcement officials.
The two suspects involved are reported to be a 23-year-old man from Riviera Beach and a 31-year-old woman from Lake Park. Both individuals are cooperating with investigators and have claimed the shooting was in self-defense. WPTV states that no charges have been filed as the individuals involved in the gunfire are known to each other through previous relationships, indicating the shooting was an isolated and targeted incident.
Despite the nearby violence, the West Palm Beach National Night Out event continued as planned at 18th and Tamarind until 10 p.m. The outreach included distributing at least 500 backpacks with school supplies to children, games, music, and free food. "We have the right people at the right time to make a positive change,” Chief Frank Adderley commented, emphasizing the need to foster a safer community through collaborative efforts. The event has been an annual tradition since 1984, aiming to build trust between law enforcement and community members.
