A 66-year-old Japanese man was rescued from the waters off Lāwa‘i Beach this Wednesday after a surfer found him unconscious, face down in the ocean. Firefighters from the Kōloa Fire Station responded to a distress call from the Kaua‘i Police Department Dispatch at approximately 12:35 p.m., as reported by The County of Kauai.
Upon arrival at the scene, fire department personnel immediately began life-saving efforts, employing the use of a Lucas device and an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) on the victim. Despite being transported to Wilcox Medical Center in critical condition, the man's current status has not been updated, according to information obtained by officials.
The entire rescue operation, from the initial report to when the scene was declared clear, lasted less than an hour, concluding around 1:10 p.m., The County of Kauai said. The identity of the surfer who initially pulled the snorkeler from the water has not been released. The Visitor Aloha Society of Kaua‘i (VASK), which dedicates itself to offering assistance to visitors in distress, is now working closely with the victim's family to provide support during this challenging time.
