Early Wednesday morning, firefighters were called to the Swap Shop flea market in Lauderhill after a fire was reported on the second floor. According to WSVN, fire rescue crews from Lauderhill arrived at the scene, located at 3291 West Sunrise Boulevard, around 7:00 a.m. to battle the fire, which had ignited in a vendor's booth.
The firefighting effort faced smokey conditions inside the building as crews worked to control and extinguish the blaze, smoke pervaded the massive structure making it difficult to clear and firefighters were forced to turn to unconventional firefighting methods which included the help from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission who brought an airboat to drive out the smoke lingering in the building. The technique allowed the officials to eventually clear the area of smoke.
Meanwhile, NBC Miami noted that there were no injuries reported due to the incident even though the main building of the Swap Shop had to be shuttered for the time being. An investigation into what caused the fire at the flea market is currently underway, and it remains precise details on when the Swap Shop may resume regular operations will be released to the public.
