Last weekend was a sobering reminder of the dangers on our roads, as the Lewisville Police Department reported a spike in the number of drunk-driving incidents. An update posted by the Lewisville Police Department indicated that on a single day, six individuals were arrested for driving while intoxicated. But the full scope of the weekend, spanning from August 23 through August 26, saw the number rise to 14 arrests.
Dubbed 'Saturation Saturday', officers on duty had their hands full with the task of fishing out impaired drivers from the stream of regular traffic. Sadly, the action peaked when a traffic officer was struck by one of the impaired drivers, resulting in both an arrest and an injury. According to the Lewisville Police Department, the officer, having been in the vehicle during the collision, sustained injuries that required a hospital visit and will keep him off the road for a duration still unspecified.
The driver involved in the collision didn't just face a charge for driving while impaired but also had an open alcohol container, adding to the gravity of the offense. As the Lewisville PD's initiative aligned with Mothers Against Drunk Driving's (MADD) #SaturationSaturday campaign, an unfortunate irony hung in the air—compliance through calamity wasn't the day's goal.
