
Tragedy struck on the near northwest side of Indianapolis late Wednesday evening as a man was fatally shot outside a business on the 2600 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. WTHR reports that police responded to shots fired around 9 p.m., where they discovered a man with a gunshot wound. Shortly after being transported to a local hospital, the victim was pronounced dead.
WRTV identified the man as George Barnett Nelson Sr., a 56-year-old who succumbed to his injuries after the shooting. Although there were initial reports of a person of interest, at the moment of reporting, no one is in custody, and detectives continue their investigation into the incident. They are urging anyone with information to come forward and provide tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 317-262-8477.
Details surrounding the incident unfolded as the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officers were dispatched following what was initially believed to be a vandalism issue. However, the call was quickly updated to a person shot, as stated on IMPD’s online reporting system. FOX59 noted that the victim, later identified as Nelson, was found suffering from at least one gunshot wound.
