Early Friday, in what witnesses described as a sudden eruption of gunfire, a man was shot multiple times at South Loop's White Palace Grill around 3 a.m., the same venue that hosted attendees of the Democratic National Convention. The 42-year-old victim, after being targeted by an unidentified shooter while exiting the diner, was hurried to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and reported to be in fair condition. The incident occurred at the establishment located at 1159 S. Canal St., which was briefly surrounded by officers and yellow tape as the investigation unfolded, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Among those present during the shooting was Colorado State Representative Javier Mabrey, himself a vocal supporter of gun violence prevention in a place foreign yet struck by violence all too familiar. “We were just sitting there eating pancakes and all of a sudden we heard a very, very loud noise and very close gunfire that was definitely coming from inside the restaurant,” Mabrey recounted in a haunting narrative to the Chicago Sun-Times.
The diner, known previously for its spotlight on Guy Fieri’s “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives” and not for crime scenes, continued to serve customers that morning amidst the brewing storm of investigation that follows the senseless discharges of a gun. The White Palace Grill management offered no comment post-event, while at the DNC, Mabrey wore his convictions literally on his lapel, donning a pin that read “Freedom from gun violence,” as he told the Chicago Sun-Times.
This latest shooting, happening mere hours after Vice President Kamala Harris addressed attendees at the DNC's closing night underscores the persistence of gun violence across America, with Mabrey articulating the widespread nature of such tragedies, “This is the reality that people face across this country,” in an interview by NBC Chicago. No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and detectives are continuing their investigation into the incident.
