Suburban Cook County logged 44 total West Nile virus cases and four deaths last year, per the same account. Statewide, Illinois confirmed 150 human cases in 2025, more than double the 69 cases reported in 2024, and 10 deaths in 2025 compared with 13 the year before. Some people may develop fever, headache, rash and body aches three to 15 days after infection, while neuroinvasive symptoms occur when the virus affects the nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord, and can include high fever, a stiff neck, confusion and muscle weakness. Officials say neuroinvasive disease may cause inflammation of the brain and can result in permanent neurological damage or death; severe cases disproportionately affect adults 60 and older.

A Statewide Pattern Emerging in Late Summer

Cook County's first cases arrived just two days after Illinois confirmed its first human case of 2026 in a Piatt County resident on August 26, as WAND-TV reported. Hoodline covered that first statewide case earlier this week. By late August, IDPH had reported at least three additional probable human cases in northern Illinois beyond the Piatt County and suburban Cook County confirmations, and West Nile virus activity in mosquitoes, birds or livestock had turned up across 50 Illinois counties statewide.

Illinois public health regulations require commercial laboratories to notify local health departments of any positive West Nile virus test result, with confirmatory testing then performed by IDPH or the CDC. That pipeline is part of why officials treat positive mosquito pools as an early warning sign, since the vast majority of human infections never produce symptoms and go undiagnosed, meaning confirmed human cases likely reflect a much wider viral presence already circulating in the environment.

Why Late Summer Heat Matters

IDPH research shows that high summer temperatures accelerate Culex mosquito breeding and speed up viral replication inside the insects, historically driving human case surges during hotter summers. Warmer conditions shorten the time it takes the virus to become transmissible inside a mosquito, increasing the rate of spread to birds and, eventually, humans.

Illinois has grappled with this threat before. In 2002, the state suffered the worst West Nile virus outbreak in U.S. history at that time, with 884 human cases and 64 deaths recorded across nearly all 102 counties, prompting the expansion of municipal mosquito control and larviciding programs throughout suburban Cook County that continue today.

Local Mosquito Control and How to Protect Yourself

Suburban Cook County's surveillance and abatement work is carried out by four regional agencies: the Northwest, North Shore, Des Plaines Valley, and South Cook County Mosquito Abatement Districts, according to the Forest Preserves of Cook County. These districts work with county health officials and forest preserve managers to monitor traps and apply larvicide. Illinois also provides $2.8 million in annual state funding to the state's 97 local health departments for vector surveillance, larvicide purchases and mosquito control operations.

Elsewhere in Cook County, Chicago health officials deployed truck-mounted adulticide spraying earlier this month across Far South Side neighborhoods including Beverly and Morgan Park after detecting elevated numbers of West Nile-positive mosquitoes, as the SW Messenger Press reported. Officials recommend that residents protect themselves by using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and eliminating standing water around the home, which mosquitoes use to breed.
