A Marblehead jogger received an unwelcome nip from local wildlife, believed to be a coyote, while running along Brown Street on the neck. The incident, which resulted in non-life-threatening injuries, was initially pegged as a dog bite but has since been reassessed thanks to a joint investigation by Marblehead's Animal Control and Animal Inspector. The authorities have since put out an advisory for citizens to stay alert and report any daylight coyote sightings.
In a move to marshal the town's vigilance, the Marblehead Police Department took to social media, stating, "After an investigation by Animal Control and the Animal Inspector it has been determined that the biting animal was possibly a coyote and the resulting injuries were not life threatening." The announcement, punctuated with the possibility of the coyote being a rabid outlier, urged the community to watch for signs of illness in the animal, as rabies would likely bring about rapid health decline. The police further emphasized the rarity of rabies but maintained the stance to not brush off precaution.
Locals of The Neck are encouraged to exercise caution and promptly report any coyote activity. The stride toward public safety is a concerted effort, involving Marblehead PD, Animal Control, and the Environmental Police, who are all upping their presence in the region to monitor the situation. This follows the notion that the incident might have been an isolated event, with the coyote unexpectedly crossing paths with the jogger.
