On an August morning tinged with the anticipation of renewal, Miami-Dade County leaders and housing developers gathered to mark a new chapter in the history of Haley Sofge Apartments. According to Miami-Dade County's announcement, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and District 5 Commissioner Eileen Higgins joined forces with Related Group to inaugurate the grand opening of the substantially rehabilitated Haley Sofge building on August 30th.
The Haley Sofge structure, a longstanding fixture at 800 NW 13th Avenue opposite the Marlins stadium, now boasts a full spectrum of modernized amenities designed to improve the quality of life for its low-income older residents. The revamp included not just cosmetic enhancements, but structural and functional upgrades such as impact-resistant windows, new plumbing, and electrical systems. Amid the renovations, the building has received an emerald certification from the National Green Building Standard, speaking to its upgraded environmental standards.
Financially, the preservation's upshot came with a hefty tag of $95.2 million in total development costs, with a notable contribution of $24.3 million from Miami-Dade as seller financing for the improvements. The feat represents the bold strides being taken under the River Parc master plan, aiming to transform the area into a diverse tapestry of affordable, workforce, and market-rate apartments, sprawling across 2,500 units by 2027.
Present at the grand opening were notables such as U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Deputy Regional Administrator Tiffany Cobb, and Alex R. Ballina, Director of Miami-Dade County Public Housing and Community Development (PHCD). Related Group President Jon Paul Pérez, and Albert Milo, President of the company's Affordable Housing Division were also in attendance, underscoring the collaborative effort involved in the project's success. The event, staged at the site of the refurbished building, welcomed guests and dignitaries at 10:00 a.m. to witness this significant stride in meeting the housing needs of the community.
With the grand opening of Haley Sofge Apartments, Miami-Dade County moves a step closer to realizing its expansive vision for a community that caters to residents across the economic spectrum. As detailed by the county's press release, this initiative is a telling sign that major urban centers such as Miami can indeed nurture projects that marry sustainability with utility, and in doing so, preserve the dignity and enhance the lives of their most vulnerable citizens.
