A Medford firefighter has been nationally recognized for his bravery following a life-threatening situation that could've ended far worse if not for his decisive action. Engineer Manny Sharp of the Medford Fire Department received the 2024 Ben Franklin Award for Valor for his heroic efforts in a house fire while he was off duty. The award was presented at the IAFC’s Fire-Rescue International conference in Dallas, an event sponsored by Motorola Solutions.
Last year on August 15, Sharp stumbled upon a burning house near his residence. Without hesitation and no protective gear, he forcefully entered the home and rescued two teenagers along with another victim trapped inside. According to the Medford Fire Department's news release, Sharp's quick thinking and bravery were crucial in saving their lives.
"Manny's courage and quick thinking exemplify the highest standards of our profession. We are incredibly honored to have him as part of our team," Chief Eric Thompson expressed pridefully in the fire department's announcement. This sentiment was echoed by representatives of the award's sponsor. "Motorola Solutions is honored to sponsor the prestigious 2024 Ben Franklin Award for Valor. The actions taken by firefighters in protecting those they serve are noteworthy, and we are privileged to be a part of this recognition," added Frank Galvin of Motorola Solutions in the release.
