A Memphis neighborhood is grappling with a mysterious sequence of events that left an 80-year-old man dead and his home in ruins. Local Memphis reports that the Memphis Fire Department was dispatched early this morning to East Georgia Avenue, where they encountered a house fiercely ablaze at what was the residence of Robert Jones, an elderly man tragically killed the day prior.
The events began to unfold Thursday when Memphis Police responded to a stabbing at a Downtown Memphis home. As per a statement obtained by FOX13 Memphis, they found the elderly victim deceased. In a cruel twist of fate, the house went up in flames the following day, further complicating matters and deepening the tragedy for the Jones family, who were already reeling from the loss of their patriarch.
While investigators have yet to draw links between the stabbing and the subsequent fire, both incidents are currently considered isolated. According to Action News 5, Jones' family had intended to return to the house Friday morning to collect souvenirs and personal items only to discover the fire. The harsh reality that the structure was significantly damaged has compounded their sorrow, taking with it not only a member of their kin but also the tangible memories that connect them to him.
No other injuries have been reported from the fire, and the Memphis Fire Department has stated that the cause is still unknown. The investigation is ongoing, as the police are examining any possible connection between the deadly stabbing and the conflagration that ensued. "No one was living in the house and no injures were reported," MFD officials said, indicating that the residence was unoccupied at the fire, which was brought under control within 30 minutes of the firefighter's arrival.
