The Memphis community is grappling with the aftermath of a Friday morning incident that resulted in the death of one of their police officers and a civilian, as another officer clings to life in the hospital. According to Action News 5, the Memphis Police Department has confirmed that the surviving officer of the collision is Officer Bobby Fields, who currently remains in very serious condition following the event that occurred at the intersection of Mississippi Boulevard and South Danny Thomas Boulevard.
Both WREG and FOX13 Memphis reported on the tragic incident that took place shortly after 3 a.m., in which an MPD cruiser was struck by a gray Nissan SUV, Memphis City Councilman Ford Canale shared this Tuesday Officer Fields' state remained critical this information comes while the community mourns Officer Demetrice Johnson, aged 34, who did not survive the crash alongside 22-year-old civilian Rantavious Johnson, who was also pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigations into the circumstances that led to the fatal collision are ongoing. It was revealed by police that before the crash, Rantavious Johnson had sustained a gunshot wound in what was described as a "disagreement" approximately two miles away from where the crash subsequently occurred, a detail confirmed by WREG. No arrests have been made to date in connection with the shooting or the crash.
The collision's impact extended beyond the individuals directly involved; the community and MPD are faced with the harsh realities of violence and loss in the line of duty, all three individuals Officer Johnson, Officer Fields, and Rantavious Johnson were rushed to Regional One Health, where sadly, Officer Johnson and Rantavious Johnson passed away while Officer Fields is listed in critical condition, as reported by FOX13 Memphis.
