Memphis police have arrested 28-year-old Christopher Murrell on charges including attempted first-degree murder after a shooting incident ended in a carjacking late last month. On July 28, shortly after midnight, law enforcement responded to a call concerning a shooting on Whitney Avenue, where a man discovered there sustained a gunshot wound, is said to have been openly sitting in his vehicle with a female companion when Murrell allegedly confronted them with a firearm, as Action News 5 reported.
The suspect demanded that the man exit his vehicle, a 2010 red Ford Focus, a demand to which the victim complied and after which he was shot in the back; shortly thereafter, his vehicle was stolen by the perpetrator, while the victim was rushed to Regional One in a critical state, this sequence of events aligns with information obtained by WREG. Investigators recovered the stolen vehicle, unoccupied, on August 6 in Frayser which is where they proceeded to locate Murrell and his girlfriend who was also taken into custody, the couple had been seen in a video going in and out of the Ford Focus and then into an apartment building.
Upon his arrest, police found key evidence including the vehicle key, marijuana, and a weapon, "Police recovered the vehicle key, marijuana, and a weapon" according to the report provided by WREG. Further complicating the case against Murrell, he was reported by police to have damaged the interrogation room and even threatened his girlfriend during his time in custody, a series of actions which have brought about additional charges including carjacking, domestic assault/intimidation, possession of a controlled substance, vandalism of property, and employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony.
