The Mesa Police Department is set to increase DUI enforcement during the Labor Day weekend, taking part in an initiative that focuses on road safety and the reduction of collisions and fatalities due to impaired driving. This comes as a collaboration with the Governor's Office of Highway Safety, in a bid to ensure that the festive celebration does not turn tragic for families across the valley.
According to Mesa Police Department's announcement, the DUI Task Force will operate from Friday, August 30, through Monday, September 2, with patrols intensifying during peak times when people are more likely to be returning from parties and gatherings, the enforcement is set to run on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 5 p.m. to 3 a.m., and continue into Monday from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m., which are key hours for the operation on these days.
The initiative is part of a longstanding effort by the MPD Traffic Unit to keep the streets of Mesa safe by deterring and dealing with impaired driving, a major cause of accidents during holiday periods. The Mesa Police Department has urged the public to act responsibly, suggesting the use of a designated sober driver or rideshare services to avoid the risk of DUI-related incidents.
If residents witness driving that appears reckless or suspect someone of DUI, the department encourages reporting to local enforcement even as the special task force goes to work, safely enjoy the holiday, and if you see something amiss on Mesa roads, you can contact the Mesa Police Department at 480-644-2211 for non-emergencies, a number that serves individuals intent on keeping their community's streets safe.
