An armed robbery suspect has been arrested following a confrontation with a Chick-fil-A delivery driver in Metro Atlanta. The Gwinnett County Police Department reported that the suspect, identified as 51-year-old Tommie Lee Williams, faces multiple charges including armed robbery, aggravated assault, and kidnapping.
According to the Gwinnett County Police, the incident took place in the early hours of July 1 when Williams allegedly shattered a drive-thru window with a rock to gain entry into the Chick-fil-A located at 5075 Stone Mountain Highway. He then threatened the delivery driver with a gun, demanding access to the restaurant's safe. Unable to open it, the driver engaged in a physical struggle with Williams, a fight lasting several minutes that was caught on surveillance video.
The Fox 5 Atlanta release describes the ordeal, noting "the victim chose to fight off the armed robber." The altercation escalated as the two wrestled over the gun, which involved punches and kicks, before the suspect eventually fled the scene through a rear exit.
Subsequently, detectives working the case located a vehicle they believed to be linked to Williams, leading to his arrest on July 31 after cooperative efforts by the U.S. Marshals and the Gwinnett County Sheriff's Department. In relation to the investigation and the evidence gathered, Williams was identified and warrants for his arrest were issued on multiple charges, Atlanta News First reported.
The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office, highlighting the importance of public safety, has not released further details on the case, as the investigation is ongoing. Williams is currently held and awaiting legal proceedings in connection with the charges pressed against him, marking an end to a month-long search that began with the brazen early morning robbery attempt at the fast-food establishment.
