Bay Area residents can expect a mild break from the typically searing August heat as the National Weather Service in Sacramento predicts near normal to slightly below normal temperatures in the coming week. According to their latest findings, today has seen a noteworthy Delta breeze that's leading to cooler temperatures in the area.

The National Weather Service report notes differences in temperature in various locales, "There's a fairly clear gradient between current temperatures in the northern Sacramento area, and areas south of the downtown area." The Delta breeze, this subtle yet consistent player in our regional thermostat, has brought about a five-degree differentiation between Sacramento Executive Airport and Sacramento International Airport. While tonight's lows are expected to tumble into the comfortable low to mid 60s.

As Saturday ushers in, a calm yet persistent upper trough building off the Oregon coast is predicted to deepen, maintaining the cooler temperatures we are settling into. The mild conditions include a promising "65 to 95% probability of temperatures below 90 degrees in the Valley, and up to a 30% chance of temperatures below 85 degrees." Adding to the cooler air, Saturday may also come with its gusts and breezes that could last into Sunday.

Those looking forward to some climatic consistency might be slightly disappointed as by Sunday and Monday, a "slight uptick" in temperatures is on the horizon, albeit still staying beneath the August average. The following days appear to remain on this trajectory of calm, dry weather, until that same persistent trough from earlier in the weekend plays a repeat performance by sticking around and potentially causing temperatures to fall back down to cooler readings by mid to late week, "Probabilities of temperatures below 90 degrees in the Valley, increase from 30 to 40% on Wednesday to 60 to 80% by Friday," the forecast includes.

VFR conditions are set to continue with surface wind gusts generally meandering below 12 knots. However, around the west Delta stronger occasional gusts of 15-25 knots could be expected mainly after 06Z Saturday. Through it all, no watches, warnings, or advisories have been issued
