The Minnesota State Patrol is debuting a new emblem for the first time in over half a century, a move that comes on the heels of the state's decision to update its seal and flag. The new design aims to encapsulate the rich history and mission of the State Patrol while aligning with modern sensibilities.

According to a release from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, a group of 13 members from within the State Patrol ranks worked closely with a design agency over four months to finally craft and refine this symbolic change. Under the leadership of Lt. Col. Jeremy Geiger, the committee sought to create a visual identity that harnessed both the legacy and geography of Minnesota. "We wanted something that represented the strong history and legacy of our division, something that is identifiable with the state of Minnesota, all while giving it a more modern update," Geiger commented in the announcement.

The new design features significant Minnesota symbols: a four-pointed North Star from the state seal, the Mississippi River, and the iconic Norway pines. The North Star points to the service reach of the State Patrol in every direction, while the river reflects its role in maintaining crucial transportation veins. The Norway pines signify the unwavering commitment of the department to state residents, reinforcing the theme of steadfast public service.

The transition to the new insignia is no mere cosmetic shift: the redesign encompasses badges, hats, squad cars, uniform buttons, license plates, and more — over 188,000 pieces of State Patrol equipment in total. Col. Christina Bogojevic indicated the State Patrol will carefully to go about updating items, prioritizing those due for replacement. "That decision presented us with a unique opportunity to create something different to represent our division and culture within the State Patrol and its staff throughout the state," Bogojevic stated. The estimated cost for the rebranding is pitched at $4 million, with an expected completion time frame of six to nine months.
