In an act of commendable police work, Minnetonka's Officer Eliana Welbes has been recognized with the department's Commendation with Distinction Award. This honor comes in light of her adept handling of a potentially violent encounter earlier this year, the Minnetonka Police Department reports.
Welbes, a recent addition to the force who started in January, proved her mettle on March 26 when a high-stakes incident called for swift intervention, after a suspect feloniously pointed a firearm at officers during a vehicle pursuit and subsequently barricaded themselves post-crash, the situation tensed with the specter of violence and the suspect's deteriorating mental health laced with the onset of hypothermia, Welbes stepped into the role of the primary negotiator and with restrained composure, she engaged for three solid hours, as per the City of Minnetonka.
According to the City of Minnetonka, Police Chief Scott Boerboom lauded Welbes' empathetic approach as pivotal, writing, "Your empathetic approach allowed you to de-escalate the situation, and you ultimately persuaded the suspect to surrender peacefully," which underscores the gravity and success of Welbes' efforts during the ordeal.
The recognition bestowed upon Welbes, known as the Commendation with Distinction, is not handed out lightly. It is reserved for Minnetonka officers who exhibit exceptional skill and determination throughout an incident.
