The saga of Ricky Lynn Burnette, an inmate from Monroe County who famously escaped and stole a truck in 2022, has reached a definitive conclusion. As reported by WVLT, Burnette, now 54, has been convicted for his actions and is set to face a significant prison sentence.
After absconding from a work detail, Burnette managed to successfully steal a white Chevrolet Silverado that belonged to a maintenance employee. The Knox County District Attorney General's Office has confirmed that the escapee has now been convicted of theft over $2,500, as he did on November 18, 2022, effectively possibly to get away in the stolen vehicle. He was apprehended the following day in Knoxville, with quick coordination by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Knox County Sheriff’s Office deputies, who found the stolen vehicle on Chapman Highway.
This incident has led to a turning point in the life of Burnette, who according to WATE, boasts a lengthy criminal history with 15 prior felony convictions spanning theft, aggravated robbery, and assault amongst other charges. During his trial, it was also revealed that Burnette had stolen handguns in the truck, heightening the potential threat he posed during his brief period of unlawful freedom.
The Knox County District Attorney General, Charme Allen commented on the conviction, "With this latest conviction, this career criminal is back in custody where he belongs," a sentiment echoed in reports from various local news outlets. Burnette is now set to unavoidably serve a 12-year sentence in the Tennessee Department of Correction, according to a statement made by the DA’s office and detailed by WVLT. The convict's sentencing is duly scheduled for October 4.
