Early Wednesday morning, a multi-vehicle crash on Oahu's H-1 East disrupted traffic and resulted in injuries for several people, as the island's drivers faced increased congestion amid the return of students to school. The incident, which occurred just before 5:30 a.m. between the Kaahumanu and Kaonohi overpasses, involved four vehicles including a city bus, Hawaii News Now reported.

According to the Honolulu Emergency Medical Service, there were six individuals involved in the crash, their conditions ranged from stable to serious. A 21-year-old woman, and a 25-year-old man were taken to a nearby hospital in serious condition. Meanwhile, a 65-year-old man, a 55-year-old man, a 55-year-old woman, and a 65-year-old woman were listed in stable condition, as per KHON2.

Responders at the scene caused the temporary closure of all entrances to the Zipperlane to allow the necessary access, which created a significant backlog of traffic during the busy morning commute. The Hawaii Department of Transportation later extended the Zipperlane's open hours to all vehicles until 9:30 a.m. in an effort to reduce delays for motorists. In the wake of the accident, first responders worked diligently to clear the scene, and all entrances to the zipper lane were reopened by about 7:20 a.m., Hawaii News Now added.

The reopening of the Zipperlane was intended, to help manage the heavy traffic which had built up due to the crash, and the subsequent investigations by the authorities. Traffic volume on Oahu's roadways, has been on the rise as students across the island head back to school, adding to the usual congestion. The Hawaii Department of Transportation and other officials are continuing to monitor the situation and direct traffic accordingly, said Hawaii News Now.
