
Window Rock was alight with remembrance and respect as the Navajo Nation marked Navajo Code Talkers Day, an annual event that not only honors the veterans but emphasizes the cultural significance and the need for the preservation of the Navajo language. Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren welcomed Lt. Gen. Michael Cederholm of the United States Marine Corps to the commemoration, where the general served as the keynote speaker.
Addressing the importance of reflection and respect for heritage, Nygren touched upon the profound impact of the Navajo Code Talkers, whose contributions 82 years ago remain deeply revered. "Today is about honoring our Navajo Code Talkers, our men and women in uniform and their families,” Nygren said, according to a release from the Navajo Nation's Office of the President. "It is a day to honor the unbreakable code in our sacred Navajo language that saved the world." Nygren, along with Cederholm, acknowledged the intertwining of cultures which, led to the inception of the unbreakable Navajo code.
Lt. Gen. Cederholm, who commands the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, expressed his deep admiration for the Navajo Code Talkers at the sunrise meeting held outside Veterans Memorial Park. In his remarks, Cederholm celebrated the resilience and history of the Navajo Code Talkers, emphasizing their enduring legacy. “We in the Marine Corps love to honor our past,” Lt. Gen. Cederholm said, as reported by the Navajo Nation. “By honoring our past, we strengthen our future. That past is full of beauty. It is full of history and heartbreak. All these things make us stronger.”
Signifying the day as one of cultural pride, President Nygren reaffirmed the sacredness of the Navajo language and the duty to preserve it. “Our language is sacred,” he stated. "We need to fight for our language. We should not shy away from speaking it. Today is a day to be proud to speak Diné Bizaad." His declaration serves as a call to action for cultural revitalization, ensuring that future generations understand and honor the linguistics that once played a pivotal role in securing peace during a turbulent time in history.
