Commuters in Berkeley should prepare to adjust their routes as Caltrans rolls out a new traffic switch at the Interstate 80 Gilman Street interchange. Starting at 9 PM on August 5, motorists will navigate the construction zone differently, with a new lane configuration, according to Caltrans.
One of the major adjustments will be the closure of westbound Gilman Street between Second Street and Eastshore Highway. Furthermore, Eastbound West Frontage Road traffic will now only be able to turn right at the new east roundabout. Drivers need to exercise extra diligence to adapt smoothly to these changes.
Detour routes have been established to facilitate uninterrupted travel. Westbound Gilman Street traffic at Second Street is advised to follow a four-step detour involving right and left turns onto 2nd, Harrison, and Eastshore Highway before rejoining Gilman. For those aimed towards the Tom Bates Sports Complex, a detour via the roundabout system is in place, as outlined in the detailed instructions provided by Caltrans.
During this construction phase, pedestrians will not be allowed to cross under the I-80 bridge. They should use the newly opened pedestrian overcrossing on the south side of the interchange. Caltrans assures the public that proper signage and guidance systems will be in place to assist everyone during this transition.
