In a fatal road rage incident in Schiller Park, charges will not be brought against a driver who shot and killed 19-year-old Malachi N. Johnson, Schiller Park police confirmed. Stemming from a dispute that began on Interstate 294, the altercation continued into the 10000 block of Irving Park Road near Scott Street around 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, as reported by the Chicago Sun-Times. The two motorists drawn into the conflict both brandished firearms and exchanged gunfire following a confrontational exchange.
Detectives assessing the case concluded that the unnamed motorist, who was involved in the shooting, acted in self-defense. Holding a valid concealed-carry license and firearm owner's identification card, the driver defended themselves when Johnson approached their Chevy Traverse after stepping out of a Nissan Sentra, amid the heated exchange. Both the Chicago Sun-Times and FOX 32 Chicago noted that there were other individuals in the shooter’s vehicle, including a woman and three "younger individuals," none of whom were injured.
The Cook County State's Attorney's Office, in conjunction with the Schiller Park Police Department, decided not to file charges against the shooter. This decision was made after a careful review of the evidence and interviews with witnesses. "No charges were planned," the Schiller Park Police Department detailed, emphasizing the finding of self-defense at play in the tragic sequence of events, mirroring details shared by the Chicago Sun-Times.
Johnson suffered a lethal gunshot wound to the chest and sadly was pronounced dead after being transported to Lutheran General Hospital, as the Cook County medical examiner's office testified. His death was ruled a homicide. Accompanying Johnson was a female passenger who, while suffering superficial wounds, was fortunately treated at the Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood and released, FOX 32 Chicago reported. The details surrounding who fired the first shot in the fatal encounter remain undisclosed by police.
