The California Highway Patrol officers apprehended a driver suspected of DUI and found a loaded firearm in the vehicle during a traffic stop on Interstate 80. The incident took place near University Avenue in Oakland last Saturday evening, just before midnight.
According to a statement released by the Oakland CHP, officers pulled over a grey Infiniti G35, citing the driver for excessive speed on the interstate's eastbound lanes. The interaction escalated when the officers, having suspected the driver to be under the influence, conducted a DUI investigation, which led to the driver's arrest despite initial resistance. Officers reported that the driver became combative but was eventually taken into custody without further incident.
The report by CHP Oakland further detailed that during the vehicle's processing in preparation for towing, a loaded firearm was discovered within the vehicle. Subsequently, the driver faces multiple charges, including driving under the influence, resisting arrest, and possession of a loaded firearm. After the incident, the driver was booked into Santa Rita Jail.
The California Highway Patrol underscored its mission "to provide the highest level of safety, service, and security." The public can follow the Oakland CHP's social media accounts for further updates.
