Tragedy struck on a stretch of SR-76 in Oceanside late last night when a BMW sedan, driven by 20-year-old Dejhaun Jones, careened out of control and rolled over, leading to a grievous incident with one confirmed fatality, according to the Oceanside Police Department. The collision, which occurred just east of Loretta Street, saw the passenger, a 22-year-old male Oceanside resident whose name has yet to be disclosed pending next of kin notification, ejected from the vehicle and fatally wounded.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the incident at approximately 11:08 pm, where they found the driver with minor injuries and the passenger suffering major trauma. Jones was subsequently transported to Scripps La Jolla Medical Center, but the passenger succumbed to his injuries at 3:18 am. despite medical efforts. Investigations have since revealed that alcohol and drugs were factors in the crash, as Jones was determined to be under the influence at the time of the accident.
In the aftermath of the collision, the driver, Dejhaun Jones, has been arrested and incarcerated at the Vista Detention Facility, facing serious charges, including Gross Vehicular Manslaughter and DUI-related charges, demonstrating the severe consequences of impaired driving. The Major Accident Investigation Team of the Oceanside Police Department is actively conducting further investigations to unravel the events leading to the accident.
