Tragedy struck the waters near Chicago's Adler Planetarium Wednesday when two men were pulled from Lake Michigan, leading to the death of one of the individuals, as reported by the Chicago Tribune. Both men had entered the lake voluntarily around 1:30 p.m. but soon found themselves in distress.
Emergency services were quick to respond and both men were rescued with one man regaining alertness while his counterpart was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in a critical state. He unfortunately succumbed to his condition, according to a CBS News Chicago report. City officials had earlier banned swimming across Chicago beaches due to high waves and rip currents, conditions perilous enough that warnings had been issued and painted onto the concrete revetments near the Planetarium.
The identity of the man who died has not been disclosed pending notification of next of kin. An autopsy is expected to be conducted on Thursday to ascertain the precise cause of death, as per the Chicago Tribune.
