In a recent development within the USL soccer league, One Knoxville SC has parted ways with the team’s head coach Mark McKeever. The announcement yesterday makes it clear that McKeever's tenure with the club has come to an end, as reported by WBIR. McKeever, who led the club since its establishment in 2021, will be stepping down effective immediately. Following his departure, former player and assistant coach Ilija Ilić is set to take the helm of the team as interim head coach.
Despite McKeever's success in achieving a South Central Division title and carrying the team to the national quarterfinals in the past, One Knoxville SC's performance had been suffering, particularly on the offensive front. To distinctly put it, the club has mustered only 19 goals across 19 matches in the current season, a figure that echoes last year's struggle where they ended with the fewest goals scored in the league. This was highlighted by WATE, emphasizing that even after several new offensive signings, the team's scoring issues persisted under McKeever's leadership. The shake-up comes while the team is in a somewhat formidable fifth place in the league but faces the challenge of clinching a playoff spot with only 10 matches remaining in the regular season.
Mark McKeever expressed gratitude towards the organization, stating, "I want to thank Drew McKenna and everyone at One Knox. It's been an incredible experience over the last few years and I am immensely proud of the progress this team has made, the support they've shown for each other and the inspiration they've provided to the fans in Knoxville. I look forward to watching and supporting One Knox's continued success both on and off the field.," as noted by Our Sports Central.
In the interim, the club has shown confidence in Ilić to guide the team. McKeever leaves behind a record of 32 wins, 23 losses, and 16 draws over his time with One Knoxville SC. The team's managing partner Drew McKenna expressed his gratitude for McKeever’s efforts, wishing him well in his future endeavors. As for the immediate future, fans await to see how the team will adapt to the change in leadership, kicking off with their next confrontation against Chattanooga Red Wolves SC, as per WATE.
