The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office has raised alarms over a recent arrest, suggesting the possibility of more victims in a case involving a man's attempt to engage in unlawful conduct with a minor. According to WPTV, Roman Gomez, 59, was apprehended yesterday, facing charges including solicitation of a child and transmission of harmful material to minors. These allegations come after Gomez was reportedly caught trying to lure a young girl via inappropriate text messages and meet her at a local McDonald's.
After an undercover sting operation, the Palm Beach County detectives arrested the man who had believed, in an oblivious turn of events, he was still communicating with his intended underage target. Instead, he found himself texting an undercover officer, who'd taken over the girl's WhatsApp account to continue the conversation, as per the investigation detailed by CBS12. It was yesterday that Gomez agreed to meet what he thought was the young girl, accelerating the intervention by law enforcement.
Gomez reportedly sent numerous explicit messages and photos to the girl over the months prior to his arrest. He suggested meeting at a McDonald's on Lantana Road before going back to his townhouse. The arrest report from the sheriff's office quoted Gomez as saying he had been "texting with a 'younglady' he knows and the conversation began to take a change," intending "to 'talk,'" according to what he admitted to the detective at his residence, as per WPTV.
Allegedly luring the girl with a misleading intent, Gomez claimed that many people trust him and he wanted to be there for her, the arrest affidavit noted. In contrast to such claims, the affidavit included transcriptions of Gomez’s messages, consisting of "multiple suggestive comments," pointing to a more nefarious objective. Detectives, having caught up with Gomez near the restaurant, questioned him before taking him into custody. This led to his appearance in court, where a judge set a bond at $115,000 and forbade Gomez from contacting any minors or accessing the internet, as WPTV reported.
The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office has urged anyone with information about Gomez or potential additional victims to step forward, recognizing the need for community vigilance in such cases. They have provided contact details for Detective Johanna Lopez at 561-688-4060, and Crime Stoppers of Palm Beach County at 1-800-458-TIPS. Both agencies are working to ensure that any other individuals who may have been targeted by Gomez's alleged actions can receive the necessary support and protection.
