The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (PBSO) is on the lookout for individuals to join its ranks as school crossing guards, a role considered crucial for the safety and education of children commuting to school. In an effort to fill approximately 35 vacancies ahead of the new school year, PBSO is hosting a job fair today where prospective applicants can learn more about the part-time positions that feature less than eight hours of work per day and include weekends and holidays off.
With the echoes of the pandemic's impact on staffing still resonating, the forthcoming job fair, taking place at the David B. Farber Training Center located at 1050B Royal Palm Beach Blvd from 9 a.m. to noon, is the county's third annual event in as many years hoping to attract community members ready to step up safety standards for young pedestrians in Palm Beach County, which has undergone significant growth and infrastructural expansion, necessitating more comprehensive traffic safety measures, especially for those walking and crossing multiple-lane roads; according to Sgt. Richard Frankiewicz, crossing guards are "pivotal in making sure that these kids are doing the right thing," as stated in CBS12's report.
Those interested in becoming a school crossing guard must have valid identification, be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen, and able to communicate in English, along with the physical capacity to stand for at least one hour, after which selected candidates are required to undergo classroom coursework followed by four days of field training. Beyond the mechanics of the job, Sgt. Frankiewicz pointed out the educational component of crossing guard duties, emphasizing their significance as the first point of contact for kids on their way to school and their role in teaching "how to use that signalized intersection with the ‘walk’ and ‘don’t walk’ lights, what you do at an intersection that maybe just has a stop sign" as he told CBS12.
Langour of summer days may still hold sway, yet the time has come for the community to lend a hand; those who missed the event but are still eager to make a tangible difference in the routines of the youth can find more details by reaching out directly to PBSO at 561-688-3805 or through their post on X as signaled by their announcement on the job fair.
