The Pima County Parks & Recreation department has recently been awarded the prestigious 2024 Outstanding Program for Aquatics Award by the Arizona Parks & Recreation Association (APRA). The recognition came during the first night of the annual APRA Conference & Expo, which took place in Tucson on August 26, according to an official announcement. The County's Swim Team Program was acknowledged for its innovative approach, for responding to a community need, and for its overall excellence.

Expressing his gratitude for the accolade, recreation superintendent at Parks & Recreation, Grant Bourguet told the Pima County Newsroom that, "Parks & Recreation is honored to receive this award." Bourguet also shared that the team is already investing efforts to further enhance this revered program for the following summer. The lauded program hosts nine teams that hail from each of Pima County's pools, allowing participants to engage in weekly practices, five swim meets, and a season-culminating daylong championship.

Pima County's endeavor isn't only about competition; it's structured to foster personal growth, development and, enjoyment. "This one-of-a-kind program enables all participants, regardless of swimming ability, to have an opportunity to compete in a safe environment that encourages personal growth and development while also having fun," Bourguet elaborated in remarks obtained by the Pima County Newsroom.

The inclusive aquatic program opens its doors wide to youth ranging from ages 5 to 18, traditionally attracting over 800 summer participants since its inception in 1992. Families interested in signing their young swimmers up for next year's excitement can mark their calendars – registration for the Swim Team Program begins in April 2025, with a summer-long participation fee set at $25.
