In a substantial push towards environmental sustainability, the Port of Oakland makes headway with a commendable 94% usage of shore power amidst ships docking at its facilities during the first half of 2024. This figure marks a significant increase from 85% recorded last year. According to a report on the Port's official website, the adoption of electric grid connections at the port, which enables docked vessels to turn off diesel engines and reduce emissions, has been more consistent than ever.

Reaching a noteworthy milestone in May with a 99% plug-in rate, the port's efforts have not waned, as the usage has stayed above 91% since November of 2023. With this initiative, "Shore power is the single most effective way to reduce vessel emissions when a ship is in port," Colleen Liang, the Port's Environmental Programs and Planning Director, stressed the importance of this technology in a statement by the Port of Oakland.

The Port's Board of Commissioners had a significant hand in exceeding regulatory requirements, encouraging even those vessels not mandated to participate in shore power integration. This forward-thinking approach ensures that local air quality benefits are not merely a passing concern but a permanent fixture in the Port's operational paradigm.
