In a tragic altercation just outside of a Nordstrom Rack in Beaverton, police officers fatally shot 39-year-old Portland resident Jacob Daniel Bundy. The incident took place Monday evening near Washington Square Mall when Beaverton Police were responding to a theft report, stated the Washington County Sheriff's Office, as reported by KGW.
The encounter escalated rapidly after officers attempted to detain Bundy, who, authorities claim, brandished a handgun. According to the Sheriff's Office via KOIN 6 News, "After a struggle in which Bundy fired his gun, Bundy was shot by police." Two officers sustained minor injuries during the scuffle. Bundy's death was pronounced at the scene, as Oregon Live reported.
A picture of Bundy's life away from the incident comes from family narratives. A relative, Mark Chan, described Bundy's struggles with addiction in an interview with KOIN 6 News, revealing that Bundy had sought alcohol and drug counseling after his release from prison in 2022. "Addiction and mental health is a real thing," said Chan, pointing to the challenges Bundy faced in grappling with his addictions - which ultimately seemed to dominate his life despite efforts to overcome them.
Chan recalled Bundy's love for his family and the outdoors, noting that his cousin was "in the track for well over a year doing good for himself." Tragically, Bundy's past enveloped him in its final, fatal moments. "But at the end of the day, his demons, his addiction got the best of him," Chan remarked on KOIN 6 News.
