A man has been found guilty by a jury of first-degree murder and firearm possession crimes in connection with a fatal shooting during a burglary in Sacramento, as per information released by the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office. Defendant Kailin Harris, previously convicted as a felon, faced trial for the slaying of a homeowner on January 17, 2022, after the owner confronted him over a string of vehicle break-ins and stolen firearms.

Harris’s criminal acts escalated from tampering with vehicles to breaking into a backyard shed and committing theft. The situation turned deadly when the homeowner, alerted by a ring camera, approached Harris, who then fatally shot the homeowner twice before fleeing. The Sacramento County District Attorney's Office confirmed the jury's conviction, which includes a special circumstance for committing the murder in the course of burglary and an enhancement for using a firearm resulting in death.

Additional convictions laid upon Harris are three counts related to tampering with a vehicle. The jury also found him guilty of possessing multiple stolen firearms from the victim’s property. His arrest followed soon after the incident, with law enforcement apprehending him on January 27, 2022.

The upcoming sentencing is set to determine the future of the convicted. With the additional allegation of Harris having prior convictions for attempted burglary, he is facing life imprisonment without the chance of parole. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for September 26, and will be presided over by the Honorable Michael Sweet in Department 20 as indicated by the Sacramento District Attorney's office.
