In a somber report emerging from Salt Lake City, a 14-year-old boy was fatally shot at the Monaco Apartments in Millcreek, with Unified Police responding to the shooting around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, as reported by ABC4. The victim, identified as John Mula, was tragically caught in gunfire while walking through the apartment complex located at 4115 South 430 East.
A brown Chevrolet Impala was spotted near the scene, inquiries revealing that multiple individuals were inside the car, and it is reported that three persons clad in black hoodies and black and white bandanas emerged from the vehicle, proceeding to shoot at the victim before hastily departing, as detailed by KSLTV. Friends family and the community are struggling to make sense of the event, trying to come to terms with the senseless nature of the act that claimed the young Mula's life.
In an act of bravery, a resident of the Monaco Apartments, Nicholas Turley, endeavored to administer first aid to the stricken boy, "I heard roughly five shots go off. I had my kids go in the back bedroom, and run outside. I was looking around," Turley said, as per FOX 13. He found Mula with a firearm next to him, which he moved aside before flipping the boy over to attempt life-saving measures, guided by a 911 operator's instructions. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, the teen succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital.
The unfortunate circumstances saw swift action from law enforcement, as all five suspects connected to the incident have been apprehended and are currently in custody, awaiting charges, an intense investigation culminated in the quick capture of those believed to be responsible according to KSLTV. Expressing their sorrow over the tragedy, the Unified Police Department along with the Millcreek Mayor and City Council extended "its deepest condolences to the victim’s family," underscoring the harrowing impact of such avoidable acts of violence on the fabric of the community.
