San Diego County Pursues $189.6 Million in Unpaid Property Taxes from Over 27K Defaulting HomeownersSource: Google Street View

Thousands of property owners in San Diego County are finding themselves in hot water as the Treasurer-Tax Collector's Office begins mailing out defaulted tax bills for those who have failed to settle their previous year's property taxes. In a move affecting 27,295 taxpayers, County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister's office is seeking a total of $189.6 million in unpaid taxes, a reminder of the financial obligations that linger over many residents.

Despite efforts to alert homeowners to the compounding late fees, which include the threat to increase penalties continuously, these parcels remain unpaid. According to San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector, McAllister stated, "We work hard to inform homeowners of the late fees that incur as a result of nonpayment, warning them along the way that additional penalties are coming". Yet, despite the reminder notices sent in May and the clear communication about added penalties, these property taxes have slipped—or have been pushed—into default.

The deadline for San Diego County's 2023-24 annual tax bill was June 30, and the repercussions for missing this date are steep. Beginning July 1, each late bill started to incur a 1.5% monthly penalty, or 18% per annum, aside from the 10% penalty added for each late installment and a $33 redemption fee. The cumulative effect of these fines sets a heavy burden on those who have found themselves behind.

Nonetheless, the impetus to settle these dues extends beyond the mounting financial strain. California State law empowers the Tax Collector to potentially sell parts of properties that have been in default for five or more years. With this looming possibility, McAllister has encouraged taxpayers to avoid future penalties and to quickly, conveniently pay via the free e-check payment system available on the Treasurer-Tax Collector's site. In the mission to streamline this process, the website asserts that it offers security, environmental benefits, and ease of use for those paying their property taxes online.
