San Francisco International Airport Embarks on $2.6 Billion Modernization of Terminal 3 WestSource: Google Street View

The future of travel at San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is set to change with the launch of the Terminal 3 West Modernization project. Priced at a hefty $2.6 billion, the initiative aims to revamp 650,000 square feet of the terminal's western half, fortifying it against earthquakes, enlarging the security checkpoint, and enhancing passenger amenities. This project is a testament to the city's relentless embrace of innovation and inclusivity.

Visitors to SFO can expect expansive new retail and dining options with 200,000 square feet of new space to house them, as explained in a statement obtained by SFO's press release. Mayor London Breed has emphasized the airport's role as a gateway to the Bay Area, stating that it should reflect the values of innovation, sustainability, and diversity intrinsic to San Francisco—a sentiment echoed by SFO Airport Director Ivar C. Satero, who aims to "create an extraordinary airport experience".

According to the plans, the project will introduce a new external façade to greet travelers, additional check-in space featuring the latest self-bag drop technology, and modernized security checkpoints. One of these checkpoints will specifically cater to AirTrain passengers on the mezzanine level. Additionally, arriving international passengers will benefit from a seamless connection to the Customs Hall in the International Terminal through a newly constructed Federal Inspection Service (FIS) sterile corridor.

With a timeline stretching into 2029, the terminal expansion includes adding a six-story building slated to house airline lounges and operational office space. During construction, passengers can conveniently utilize a temporary walkway designed to maintain accessibility across terminals. This walkway is set to open by the holiday season 2024 and aims to ensure that the travel experience remains uninterrupted.

Investing not only in infrastructure but also in environmental sustainability, SFO is targeting a LEED Platinum certification for the project. These green vision features include initiatives like daylight harvesting and the implementation of on-site photovoltaic cells. In a push for economic inclusion, the project anticipates employing up to 600 workers at its apex and is already targeting to allocate over $173 million in contracts to Local Business Enterprises (LBE).

Turner Construction Company, Gensler, and TEF Design are the design-builders at the helm of this monumental project, with WCME JV—comprising PGH Wong Engineering, Inc., Consor Engineers, MCK Americas, Inc., and ECS Consultants—acting as construction managers.
