Big shifts are occurring within the San Francisco School Board as President Lainie Motamedi steps down from her position. Motamedi, who has served on the Board since her mayoral appointment in March 2022, cited "personal and health reasons" for her departure. During her tenure, Motamedi oversaw significant educational reforms, including enhanced literacy and math curriculums and better compensation for educators. According to the City and County of San Francisco, she expressed pride in leaving the district "much better off than when I joined it."
Following this change, Mayor London N. Breed has moved to quickly fill the vacancy by appointing Phil Kim, a longtime education professional, to serve out the remaining term. With over a decade of experience in education, including a recent stint as the Executive Director of School Strategy at SFUSD, Kim is praised for his deep understanding of the system's intricacies. Mayor Breed mentioned Kim is "ready to go on Day one", as reported by the City and County of San Francisco.
Phil Kim brings particular expertise in STEM education and has been influential in establishing inclusive environments, especially for disenfranchised groups like the LGBTQ community. His appointment has been met with support from Senator Scott Wiener, who affirmed Kim's aptitude and readiness for the role.
In addition to his professional undertakings, Kim has been active on the boards of the LYRIC Center for LGBTQQ youth and the Alice B Toklas LGBTQ Democratic Club. His background indicates a consistent effort to build a school system that addresses the needs of all students collaboratively. Kim expressed his commitment, as per the City and County of San Francisco, saying, “I am determined to carry on the good work of the Board."
